When doing professional laser hair removal, its important not just
to study the brand but also get a basic understanding of the different technologies
involved. That’s because the technology itself can only cater to a limited number
of clients. So what you may think is the limitations of the brand is not at all
about the build but the actual technology used.
According the 2019 Laser
Hair Removal Cost Statistics, each treatment boils down to $143. If
strictly by physicians, it rings up to $285.
There are four different types of laser hair removal:
1. Ruby
2.
Alexandrite
3.
Diode
4.
Ng:YAG
This depends on the wavelength of
the laser and the depth of its penetration.
Ruby is the
oldest type of laser and is now outdated. It can only treat people on the lightest
skin tone scale and only with dark hair. No clinic, save for the old ones, use
this technology for laser hair removal anymore.
Alexandrite is
one of the popular ones, and offered by the leading brands in laser hair removal
like Candela and GentleLase. It’s the best for treating areas like the legs and
back. The down side is its also on the painful side.
The Alexandrite system also only works on light skin and dark
hair.
Diode is
another popular tech with its depth in penetration. Its wavelength is one of
the deepest and therefore one of the most effective. The laser can also be
customized to the patient.
Nd:YAG is
the only system that works on dark skin. It has the longest wavelength out of
all the lasers available in the market today. Some machines have a combination
of both Alexandrite and Nd:YAG for a more versatile machine. Here in our
clinic, we have several brands that has both technologies.
BONUS: IPL. Also
called Intense Pulsed Light, this is not a true laser. It uses broad light
instead and that light is filtered to make a focused laser. It works almost as
well, but it doesn’t reach the depth of true lasers, thus is less effective per
treatment. You may need 10-12 on average compared to the 6-8 of the normal laser
treatments.
